General Information
Frederick II was born on January 24, 1712 to Frederick I and Sophia Dorothea. His father and mother had strained relations and he suffered as a result, as his father frequently took his temper out upon young Frederick. When Frederick II turned eighteen, he attempted escape with a friend of his from childhood because of abuse from his father. This attempt failed and his companion was executed. Frederick II was then placed into an administrative position to learn how to run a government. His father died years later and left Frederick II with a strong military and large treasury.
Frederick proceeded to have martial success. He enjoyed a triumphant campaign in Silesia and was later over-glorified by nineteenth century German historians. His standing as a commander and strategist was confirmed by Napoleon Bonaparte, who famously said, "Gentlemen, if this man were still alive I would not be here". He is considered to be one of the greatest military theorists ever to live and his various reformations were adopted by prominent countries such as Russia. His influence goes further still; he was responsible for bringing the arts to Prussia and composed many pieces of music himself. He adored French culture and used his treasury to try and surpass it through giving patronage to various artists. This rich cultural background and impressive military record are why Frederick is remembered to this day as such an outstanding leader.
